Defying Mother Nature

One of our favorite venue coordinators to work with is Mother Nature. Yes, sometimes she is temperamental, but with Plan B and even Plan C’s we’ve had the pleasure of working on some gorgeous events.

One of our all time favorite outdoor events was Heritage Ball 2009. All of the vendors involved took on all that Mother Nature had to throw at us. Thunderstorms, mud, and even geese. Take a video tour on YouTube with Blake and Zoe and see how we turned this:

If only to be 13 again…. I remember when an ice cream cake and sleep over sufficed for my birthday parties, but here in Nashville we know how to throw some amazing Bar and Bat Mitz Vah’s. Nashville Event Lighting has had the opportunity to work on some of the BEST Bar and Bat Mitz Vah’s in town, proving that we don’t just do weddings.

This week we wanted to feature Taylor Asher’s Bar Mitz Vah planned by Events by AP.

Check out the transformation of the Loveless Barn just by using LED’s.

One of our favorite lighting elements at this event was using the color changing LED’s under Music City Tents and Events Axis furniture.

The adults even had their own private lounge.

The “Yes” Mentality

In the event industry we are faced with challenges on a daily basis. These challenges can range from mother nature to not defacing the integrity of a historical landmark. When faced with a challenge, we could either tuck our tails and hide or face them head on. At Nashville Event Lighting we live by the motto “If there’s a will, there’s a way.”

One venue that we absolutely love to work in but face challenges on, due to its massive size and limited rigging points, is Country Music Hall of Fame.

When bride June Marable walked into our office to discuss her vision for her December reception at CMHOF, we were more than willing to do our best to execute her ideas. (Insert the “Yes” mentality)

Her Vision: Italian String Lights throughout the conservatory and chinese paper lanterns incorporated, somehow….. How did we do this? 1st the bride gave us complete control over our lighting design plan with the help of her planner Meredith Zeller of Bridal Blueprints. 2nd, we incorporated our trussing to provide support and rigging points. 3rd, we created a centerpiece over the head table by hanging different shapes and sizes of chinese lanterns. We also added a special touch to her custom gobo on the rotunda wall by adding a custom red scroll from a previous event we did. Thinking about doing a themed reception? Check out this reception we had the pleasure of being a part of at Union Station Hotel.

Planner Karen Kafforey with Signature Events had everything planned out to a T (pun intended). The groom would have his own dedicated section in the McKinley Ballroom where it was all decked out with UT florals and goal posts provided by Ilex. This allowed the bride to have her fabulous ballroom wedding she always dreamed of. At the end of the evening the bride and groom had their chance to run through their very own Super T.

What is a Gobo?

One of the most frequent questions we get is “What is a Gobo and What does it stand for?”. According to Wikipedia a gobo (or GOBO) derived from “Go Between” or GOes Before Optics -originally used on film sets between a light source and the set is a physical template slotted inside, or placed in front of, a lighting source, used to control the shape of emitted light.

In simple terms it is a “stencil” for a particular light fixture we use. There are 2 types of gobos: stock gobos and custom gobos. We have hundreds of patterns and images to choose from in our stock gobos, and if we don’t have what your looking for, we can definitely have it made.

How can you use gobos to create that “WOW” factor in your next event? Create texture and design to your dance floor, walls, ceiling, tables, furniture vignettes, ect.. Possibilities are endless. You can also use them to carry out a theme throughout your event. Example: monograms, linen or invitation patterns, and logos.

Gobo’s can also be set to motion. We’ve set the moon to gradually move over a tent ceiling, feathers to slowly rotate on a dance floor, and snowflakes to continuously fall throughout the event.

We were so honored when Fred Jacobs and the group at JMI gave us the opportunity to provide lighting and AV for Weddings the Bridal Show. With over 1,400 brides passing through the maze of booths, we were amazed at how successful the show became.
